Endocrinology – we hold general endocrine clinics and specialist endocrine clinics.
Specialist Endocrine Clinic
One stop Thyroid nodule assessment clinic
This clinic is run by a consultant endocrinologist Dr Rehman. An ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon is also available to see patients as necessary and to perform laryngoscopy to visualise the inside of the neck and vocal cords on the spot. Ultrasound scanning and ultrasound guided biopsy of thyroid nodules are also available on the spot if necessary, to provide a one stop service for the assessment of new thyroid nodules.
This clinic is run by Dr Swords, Dr Ahluwalia and Professor Dhatariya. There are specialist endocrine nurses also present in the clinic and may see patients together with the consultant or separately eg for education about their pituitary disorder.
Neuroendocrine tumour clinic
This clinic is held once a month jointly with Dr Gaurav Kapur, consultant oncologist, Dr Swords, and a specialist neuroendocrine tumour nurse. This clinic is held in Oncology outpatients, Level 1 East block.
Dr Swords, Professor Turner and Dr Srinivas each offer joint clinics with the department of paediatric endocrinology several times a year. These are held jointly with Dr Webb or Dr Datta respectively to allow a smooth transition between paediatric and adult services.
Weight management clinic
Dr Myint & Dr Srinivas run a weekly tier 3 multidisciplinary weight management clinic on Fridays with an obesity specialist nurse, psychologist and specialist dietician.
This clinic offers the low energy liquid diet as well as structured diets and personalised exercise programmes, and investigation and treatment for underlying causes of and complications of obesity. This clinic can also offer specialist assessment, preparation, referral for and follow up after bariatric or weight loss surgery. Paediatrics also offers a monthly paediatric weight management clinic with support from a paediatric obesity specialist nurse.
Turner Syndrome clinic
Patients with Turner’s syndrome attend a specialist nurse-led Turner’s clinic once a year as well as being seen regularly in the adult endocrinology clinics.
Hypertension / Blood pressure clinic
We have a clinical pharmacology and difficult hypertension service with Dr Myint.
Calcium and Metabolic clinic
The metabolic clinics are held several times a month. Patients with metabolic bone disease are currently seen in these clinics by Professor Turner, Dr Rehman or Professor Fraser.
One Stop Fracture assessment clinic
Patients thought to be at risk of fractures can be referred directly into one of Professor Turner’s one stop fracture assessment slots within the calcium and metabolic clinic. This clinic offers on the spot bone density scans and specialist bone marker blood tests to enable patients to receive a personalised 5 year fracture risk reduction plan all in one clinic visit.
Dr Gomez currently runs a specialist lipid clinic.
Clinic letters and communication
A letter is sent to your GP following all clinic appointments outlining the details of the appointment, as well as any suggested changes to treatment. Please ask if you would like copies of your clinic letters to be sent to you automatically as well.
If you are unable to attend your appointment it is very important that you let us know as soon as possible so that we can give the appointment to someone else. Please feel free to ask any member of staff if you have any questions during your visit.
